24Qantas Business Rewards vs Qantas Frequent Flyer

Instead of earning points directly to your personal Qantas Frequent Flyer account, Card members will earn points in their Qantas Business Rewards account (free to join) which is linked to the company ABN.

This means that a business with multiple employees can pool the total points in the business account and from there distribute them to anyone they wish. If you’re not already a Qantas Business Rewards member, they joining fee of $89.5 is waived when you sign up online.

This offers more flexibility to the business owner who can decide how the points are spent. Since they can be sent to anyone with a Qantas Frequent Flyer number, they can be used as a company incentive for example.

Charge Card, Not A Credit Card

The American Express Qantas Business Rewards card is not a credit card but a charge card. This means there’s no pre-set limit, giving business owners more spending power when they need it. However, this also means it’s not possible to carry a balance: payment is required in full on the due date.

American Express Qantas Business Rewards Earn Rates

Since Qantas Business Rewards transfer to Qantas Frequent Flyer at an equal rate (1:1), there is no downside, only benefits of earning in QBR (Qantas Business Rewards) due to the flexibility it offers.

  • 1.25 Qantas Points per $1 on all purchases except for utilities, insurance (except Amex insurance), government agencies including the ATO. (uncapped)
  • Triple Qantas Points on eligible Qantas flights paid for with your Card (this is in addition to the 2 points per $1 earn rate on Qantas products)

In addition to standard earn rates, as a QBR member, you earn additional points on Qantas flights when you enter your ABN number at the time of booking. The bonus points earned are not related to the Amex QBR Card, but it’s based on the actual miles flown multiplied by 20-40% depending on your membership level. If you hold an American Express card issued through your bank (Westpac for example) or through David Jones, you are eligible for the 140,000 bonus Points.

Keep in mind; it’s perfectly fine to have multiple Amex cards under one account, you just won’t get the sign-up bonus. This means as a business owner; this card would still offer you significant value due to the points earning power generated through everyday business expenses.
